SAVE THE BUCK’S HEAD STEERING GROUP
The Save The Buck’s Head Steering Group was set up in January 2026, (with the support of Wymondley Parish Council (WPC)), to try to save and preserve Little Wymondley’s 16th century, Grade II listed Buck’s Head pub for future generations.
The pub, which is a registered Asset of Community Value was closed on 9 November 2025, having been put up for sale by its owner on 28 October. It remains closed and WPC has expressed an interest in bidding for it. The Steering Group has therefore been liaising with the local community to establish how best to transform the Buck’s Head and its grounds into a welcoming, inclusive and accessible social hub which will support community life, social cohesion and residents’ wellbeing.
Our aim is that it will operate as a sustainable community asset for the benefit of Wymondley Parish residents, as well as the wider community; and will provide a range of facilities and services designed to meet the needs of residents of all ages and backgrounds.
Our objectives are:
- To improve social cohesion by providing increased opportunities for socialisation.
- To reduce isolation within the community by providing a range of activities and facilities designed to bring people together.
- To provide facilities which are accessible to all members of the community.
WPC has no “right to buy”, only a right to bid, and there is no guarantee any bid it makes will be successful. However, the Steering Group is taking a positive approach in anticipation of success, and planning ahead. It has also been exploring options for collaboration with other interested parties, should their bid be successful.
We have formed a Community Interest Company (CIC), The Buck’s Head Community Hub CIC, and are in the process of registering it with Companies House. A business plan has been drafted, unpaid directors appointed and applications for funding are being made.
We are aiming for the CIC to become self-financing within 3 years, and all profits will be ploughed back into the company to be used for the good of the community. If the company is dissolved, any surplus funds will be transferred to the Little Wymondley Recreation Ground and Children’s Playground Charity (Registered Charity No: 302507).
Although WPC has not been formally notified, it seems that the Buck’s Head has been withdrawn from sale. We are nevertheless continuing with our plans so that we are prepared to act if it comes back onto the market.
